Adults do build temporary shacks/huts, but children don’t leave beer cans, bottles, needles, grocery trash, make campfires, have places to sleep as in real life. On this slideshow I have added huts filmed with phone and digital camera.Īlso I have noticed that an imaginary playground can look like almost anything, so a hut/maja is a living and flexible idea, which is part of the beauty of play, which I have also noticed adults tend to dictate and say what a hut/maja is and is not, where they go wrong instantly.
After having written my text on the wall, I let the visitors draw and write what they wanted on the walls. Images (80 dia slides in a carousel projector constantly rolling) from the exhibition 2012 in Pori in gallery 3h+k.
Few branches make a dwelling, woolen thread can make a space to go in.
What you do not have can be imagined and self-made. Charming is the effortlessness how imaginary world is built from simple materials nearby without a ready-given plan and money. Building a hut is a process which end-result is surprising bringing feeling of success and joy of having made and been able to realize ideas of one’s own. They are to my mind images of one’s soul, natural constructions using intuition, private hideaways, dreamy and sudden, ideas to place oneself in, utopias, nests, shelters and just places of play etc. Photographing huts I have found picturing a carefree state, picturing freedom of imagining, detachment, independence, otherness and outsiderness, even though those characteristics wouldn’t be reasons for making a playground with a hut.
Huts I have mostly found in the suburbs wandering, also kids find their way to the woods close to suburbs, to thickets behind garages and to wastelands, which are free zones spiritually, abandoned in their feel. Interesting is the relation between huts and the constructed environment, children’s relation to the built environment, how kids take their place or are let to take their place, how much space there is to invent. Huts are places of imagination, imaginary buildings, spontaneous constructions to play in and with. Huts have woken up my curiosity in their variety.
